How to tie a Palolo Worm Fly with a Weedguard

The annual Palolo Worm Hatch in the Florida Keys is a true spectacle of Mother Nature. Thousands of tarpon collect for a gorging feast during the short time they hatch.  This little Palolo Worm Fly is one of the best ways I have learned to match the hatch.

Tarpon fishing demands using a strong hook. I prefer a Gamakatsu SL12S size 1/0 for all of my tarpon fishing.

This Worm Pattern is tied with red rabbit strips that are clipped. I have experimented with a few other colors and had pretty good success.

I find that I catch more fish during the worm hatch when I use a weed guard on my Palolo Worm Flies. I simply use 15 lb. or 20 lb. flouro or mono for my weed guard.

How to tie a Black Death Tarpon Toad

The Black Death Tarpon Toad is one of my favorite Back Country Tarpon Flies, mostly because it is big, black and red, and tarpon eat it up. I have caught fish on this pattern in the channels, in the flats, and in the flow. Fly fishing for tarpon is one of the most exciting fishing experiences and having enough of the right fly is invaluable. A well tied Black Death Tarpon Toad is certainly one of the best tarpon flies to have in your collection.

Materials List:

I use Gamakatsu SL12S #1/0 for every giant tarpon fly I tie. This hook is very good at hooking and keeping an upper lip without bending out.

For this particular Tarpon Toad Pattern, I chose to use bead chain eyes. I usually use size medium or large when I choose to weight my toad flies.

The Black Death Pattern calls for a combination of red and black. I used red rabbit strips for the tail.

This fly also calls for a marabou collar. You may need all sorts of colors of marabou for the tarpon toads you can tie.

Finally, the head of this fly is tied with EP Fibers. There are many colors, so choose wisely...

Super Glue is a must for a saltwater fly tyer.  I typically use the super glue that is on sale.

Migrating Tarpon are one of the greatest challenges a fly fisherman can face. Giant fish, tiny hook. If you have the need to catch a monster fish with a fly rod, go to http://www.riplips.com/florida and book a tarpon fishing charter in the Florida Keys.

How to tie a Black and Purple Tarpon Toad

Very few Tarpon Flies work as well as a Black and Purple Tarpon Toad. This tarpon pattern uses bead chain eyes to add a little weight. I like to use a strong 1/0 big game hook and 80 lb bite when I fish a Black and Slurple Tarpon Toad, because I expect to get a big fish to bite it.

I use the best tarpon hook I can for all of my Tarpon Toad Flies. The one I like is Gamakatsu SL12S 1/0

I use strong, dark colored thread for this particular tarpon fly, but any strong thread will do.

The tail of this saltwater pattern is tied with purple rabbit strips.

The collar of this fly is tied with black marabou. i have also experimented with black rabbit and find it works pretty well too.

The wide head of this Tarpon Toad is tied with Black EP-Fibers.  However, I am finding more and more synthetic tying fibers that bring my tarpon flies to life.

Finally, this tarpon fly is tipped with a set of large bead chain eyes.  The beauty of tying a Balck and Purple Tarpon Toad is that you can weight it any way you like.
